Attempting to travel to every country in Europe - I'm currently at number 39!
Hello and welcome to my UA-cam channel - a place where I document my journey around this incredible continent, learning about the history, geography and culture as I go. Yes I visit the big cities and famous landmarks but I'm also fascinated and intrigued by the less touristy, quieter places in some of Europe's forgotten corners. I aim to produce informative, authentic videos that reflect the true nature of European travel and the real experiences that go along with it.

My Day in SAVONLINNA Did NOT Go To Plan! 🇫🇮
My day in Savonlinna Finland exploring the small & mostly wooden town centre & the historic Olavinlinna Castle built by the Swedes to deter a Russian invasion - but my time there didn’t go to plan!
🇫🇮 See more of my travel vlogs from Finland here → bit.ly/mwt_finland
Olavinlinna Castle is a historic fortification located on an island in Lake Saimaa close to the town centre of Savonlinna. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area and one of Finland's most recognisable sights.
Olavinlinna Castle is also known as St Olaf’s Castle in Swedish and was built in the Kyromsalmi Strait during the 15th century. I bought an admission ticket and made my way inside for a walk about - however things didn’t go to plan and I ended up in a Finnish hospital following a mishap inside.
Before that though I took a walk around the stone courtyard and defensive walls, learnt about why the island was chosen and not others that are further north, and joined a few other tourists in taking a peek inside.
Thankfully before the accident forced me to change my plans I had taken a brief tour of Savonlinna town centre with its wooden buildings and cobbled streets, and checked out my accommodation at the Savonlinnan Kristillinen Opisto Wanha Pappila after a room tour at the property.

Sounds like it was the cap that got you. Those low doorways can really get you when you walk through them wearing a cap. Even without the additional sharp edges. I hope your visit at the castle wasn't cut too short. No pun intended. Here's an introductory film of the castle. Maybe you can spot the doorway that got you there: "Olavinlinnan esittelyelokuva - Olavinlinna Castle's Introductory Film".
What an adventure ! Thank you for the videos about Finland. Had me thinking it was cardiac or something for a second, glad it was superficial~ish.
Me too! Thanks for watching. 😀
Sorry to hear of your loss in the Headbutt-Battle🤕 with that 15th-Century Castle Doorway. I'm sure it's record is MOSTLY undefeated. When you're in those old castles and other structures doing the more adventurous explorings as I've seen you do in several places👍 you'll need to adopt a posture, early, for certain openings that mimics "Igor" (Marty Feldman) in the film "Young Frankenstein" (1974)🙂 If your not careful hitting your head to many times they may put your-brain in a glass jar like the one Igor called "Abby-Normal"😄 Looking forward to the next video💯✝️🕊️
It sounds like I need to work on my posture! As you say it was a scrap I was never going to win 🤕 I’ll keep the “Young Frankenstein” in mind 😆
I am curious where did you shoot that last piece to camera?
I will reveal all in two episodes time when I give an apartment tour, next week I’ll post what I did between leaving the hospital and arriving at my accommodation. 😀
I'm extremely glad it wasn't more serious. Do you now have a permanent scar to remind you of the debacle?
I think there is a slight mark but it’s above the hairline so thankfully not noticeable. Lucky I was wearing a cap otherwise it would have been even worse.
Oh no! Nice that it wasn't a very serious wound and you're ok. When I was a kid we lived less than 100km from there and sometimes did sunday trips there with my parents.
Thanks, all's well that ends well! Sounds good, I bet you have some nice memories of the place!
@@MattWhitingsEurope The last time I visited the castle was 3 years ago. It was a really hot day and I was sweating when I was climbing all the stairs :)
If you visit again look out for a small head sized dent above one of the internal doors.
@@MattWhitingsEurope Haha!
Very unfortunate. Hope it didn't sour you trip too much! People must have been shorter back in the day.
Some might say it knocked some sense into me! All good now thankfully.
Hitting your head seriously and getting it quickly fixed and jumping to have a car trip might not be what the doctor would have suggested..? :/ You might have had a concussion that would have still start to act up while you were driving (being danger to you and the others on the road) and (alone) be farther from the hospital. And you certainly should not have been alone next night without anyone check on you regularily. :/
I guess that's one of the downsides of travelling solo. The doctor said he didn't see any signs of concussion at the hospital and told me to keep an eye on it for a few days. I had information on what signs to look out for but thankfully never experienced any of them. Had I of felt unwell of shown signs of concussion I wouldn't have driven on because the last thing I would want to do is put myself or anyone else in danger. I live to tell another tale!
Seems our border defences are still working to this day! Too bad you had to experience it.
Working a little too well if you ask me! 🤕😆 Don't mess with the Finns!!
😄
Hi Matt. I am first going to watch this to the end……and here comes the crunch moment from your hotel room….ouch ouch ouch….thank goodness for kind people helping you. (I never told you previously that I am a medical doctor AND a psychiatrist)….The scalp bleeds profusely. That superglue works well to close scalp lacerations…I dare suggest that Finland’s healthcare system would rate highly for efficiency. Were you still an EU citizen, you would not have paid a cent because for all emergency cases, there is an agreement between the 27 EU countries to cover emergency hospital expenses…What ultimately matters most is that you hopefully didn’t experience any long term effects like concussion….Here’s a crazy thought…or is it…sometimes having a traveling companion…not sure what distances you drove per day but perhaps you were a bit fatigued… There ends my long missive. Best wishes, until next time. Zoltán
Hello Zoltán , thanks for the information, as a doctor I could have done with you there at the time! 😆 Yes I was thankful to the lady for helping me but when I look back at the incident I'm quite surprised the castle didn't have any first aiders or even a proper first aid kit. They had to look in 2-3 locations to find a plaster. I actually do carry plasters myself but they weren't quite big enough for the cut - and also I couldn't see what I was doing. The lady that helped made the best of a difficult situation and was nice enough to call the hospital to see what they recommended. As far as healthcare, I actually do still get the same healthcare treatment as a local because the UK and Finland have a reciprocal deal so Finns in the UK can use our NHS and Brits in Finland can use your healthcare service. It actually sums up Brexit quite well - when we were in the EU I was able to use the healthcare facilities in any other member state. When we left the EU Boris Johnson decided to launch a Global Health Card system, however the global card works in less countries than the EU one. Go figure! Thanks again for your insight.
@@MattWhitingsEurope good morning. The absence of a basic first aid kit is a concern and makes one wonder about other places one visits as a traveller. I too carry plasters around with me everywhere I go…In my over the shoulder man bag. In regards costs of treatment, like you always say, it sounds reasonable. No doubt next week you’ll upload another fascinating segment. And nearly a year later, you’ve lived to tell the tale, and hopefully without any long term consequences. Naturally my nurturing nature shall wish you further safe travels and to look after yourself (I’m sure you’re fully capable of doing so). Accidents happen Cheers Zoltán The following might be helpful to any of your readers…especially useful if you’re on your own and nobody close by to assist. When it comes to basic first aid use acronym “RICE”. The idea is to help reduce the bleeding/swelling as much as possible. R- rest (stop moving) I - apply ice to affected area (a cold pack in other words) C- compression/ apply pressure to affected area - stems bleeding eventually allowing formation of a clot E - elevation (if applicable) of affected area to reduce amount of blood flow
Im glad I’m not the only one carrying plasters around. You never know when they might come in handy. Thanks for the information regarding RICE, very useful to us all. 👍
That would have been 25€ or 30€ if raise already happened. But with brits out of Eu you don't get local prices anymore. And that same 25/30€ is for everything, from small cuts to bloodtests and x-ray. Public healthcare is very cheap long as you don't have stay over night.
The UK has a reciprocal health agreement with Finland hence why I was able to use the Finnish healthcare system as if I were a local. I was very impressed though. In the UK I'd have been stuck in the hospital accidents and emergency department for 4-5 hours so to be in and out inside 2 was very impressive.
The fee is really more for trying to dissuade people from going there unnecessarily than it is about covering the real costs. If you really can't afford it, you can get an exemption on the fees. Staying overnight isn't that expensive either, in fact it's probably less than a tourist would pay for their accommodation.
I did wonder if that was the case. Sounds sensible. I know in the UK we have a big problem with people making appointments and then not turning up - I should imagine the fee encourages people to cancel it properly if they can’t make the appointment meaning someone else can have the appointment.
Those old castle corridors are so low and narrow.
Not to mention solid!! I am thankful I was wearing my baseball cap as it must have absorbed some of the blow. Without it I probably would have knocked myself out.
Sorry for your misadventure. I enjoy your entire travel diary. Thanks for sharing all those beautiful places and areas. 🙏
Thank you, all good now! Glad you're enjoying the videos, really appreciate you saying!
Savonlinna is Nyslott in Swedish means Newcastle in English.
Thanks for the information, I didn't realise that!
Fantastic Video Travel log, the Drone Footage adds a nice aerial view of things. Finland really looks like a nice place to visit weather permitting.
Thank you, much appreciated. I love getting the drone up where I can. Makes me wonder how incredible the area would look in the winter time when snow covers the land.
Oh no, hope you are doing okay! I spent my summers in Savonranta (a small town nearby) as a kid, the whole region is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.
All good now thanks. Yes it's a lovely area, I really enjoy driving through it and seeing the scenery! Just had a look to see where Savonranta is, crazy how remote some of these places are. What an incredible area! Thanks for watching.

That's the same the Finns pay for their "free healthcare." Why should foreigners have it free?
however, we have not sunk into a terrorist state...

Me Kelly.😅 when you get to a double consonant in Finnish, KK, PP, TT, SS, LL you don't pronounce it twice but you should hold that consonant just a bit longer at that point. Just enough that it can be noticed.
Thanks for the guidance, very useful. Thanks.
Hi Matt, I have driven that road many, many times and it takes my breath every sigle time. Also, I cycled that same road when I was 16 or 17 y old. I'll never ever forget that.
Wow cycling it sounds like even more of an adventure. How many days did it take?
Not gonna pretend to be an expert on our road network, as I don't even own a car, but based on the little experience I have I'd give the title of the most scenic road to the one numbered 970.
Interesting. Thanks for the suggestion however I can't seem to locate it. Where does it start and end?
@@MattWhitingsEurope From Karigasniemi to Nuorgam WAY north on the Norwegian border. I noticed after my comment that even the Finnish Wikipedia article mentions that it has been called the most beautiful road in Finland. This is of course subjective, and from a Finnish point of view: it's mountainous out there, and we don't have much of that in Finland, so it undoubtedly gets even more impressive on the other side of the border.
Thank you, I’ll look it up! 👍
Finland should get their territory back.
Burns not streams Matt.
I need to remember that. Thank you!
4:30 Everyone's mentioned it but the logs would be driven on water. Google tukinuitto, its a cool sight imo. 10:14 Not sure of the first one, too faded and Im no expert on bears. But the other two are most definitely dog toes! 14:40 lots of little roads like that, many are made by private land owners and either maintained or... not maintained by them. Often the use case is just access to the woods. The vast majority of Finnish forests are used for logging so they're cut down once or twice in a lifetime. The forest around the road youre walking down seems maybe 5-10 years post harvest. Finland is absolutely full of 60s to 70s architecture as that time period saw two notable trends - people moving away from the countryside into cities requiring more housing, and old buildings being replaced by new ones in a phenomena known as the disease of Turku.
Great vid! Thanks Matt, im thinking of going soon :)
Thanks! Lovely area, I hope you have a great time!!

Tank T34-85 not exist at 1940.
Finland was allied with Nazis. 😂
4:28 It is actually likely that they were not loaded onto a boat. Huge amounts of logs used to, and still are today bound together and floated down stream, or pulled by boats!
Hello, thanks for the info. Someone else mentioned the same thing and pointed me towards a video of the logs being floated down the lake - it was quite an impressive sight.
Harjutie (Yhdystie 4792) is the most beautiful route in Finland, it was voted as the "Century Road"!
Sounds interesting, where in Finland will I find it?
@@MattWhitingsEurope Harjutie is located at the Punkaharju, east of Savonlinna about 30km away.
Mask?
Yes it was filmed at the tail end of COVID when the ferry still had rules about wearing a mask inside. I kept it on whilst outside because 1) it was less hassle to keep taking it off and putting it back on, and 2) it kept my face warm! 😆
Interesting video. Thanks 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it 😃
Finland is such a beautiful country
Very true.
Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä, better known as the White Death, is one of my favorite badass heroes in history.
A few others have mentioned him, apparently he was buried in Ruokolahti which I visited in the first Route 62 video --> ua-cam.com/video/_SdOueZCWv4/v-deo.html - unfortunately I didn't realise it at the time!
@@MattWhitingsEurope Nice, wonderful channel!
@@joshflugel Thank you 😁
